One of Appanoose county's residents died Thursday evening Feb. 8, 1910, when Silas Lane was called from life after a week's sickness. His life was made notable not only for its usefulness and uprightness, but because of the number of years he was spared, he being 93 years, 2 months and 7 days old. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Merritt, on N. 9th street.
He was born in Fayette county Penn., Dec. 31, 1816. When about 25 years old he was married to Katherine Boyle, in Somerset county, Penn. They came to Appanoose county, Iowa, in 1863, locating on a farm south of town in the Wesley Chapel neighborhood. He had previously been in the hotel business. He ceased active work in farming in 1891 and moved to Centerville. Here Mrs. Lane died March 18, 1896. Two children survive. Mrs. Geo. W Merritt and Wm. H. Lane, three having passed away, Silas E. Jr. who was killed on the railroad in l883, Loyd, and a child that died in infancy. A brother, J. W. Lane, aged 9l, lives here. The family is long lived and vigorous.
While yet a young man Mr. Lane became a member of the Methodist church. Until recently he was able to attend services occasionally. He lived an exemplary life, and stood high in the estimation of all who knew him or had dealings with him.
The funeral was conducted Thursday at 2:30 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Merritt, by Rev. J. R. Hanley, of the Methodist church.
