1. Herzog renamed Victoria, Kansas didn't have a blacksmith, so the town asked him to come. Story told by his daughter Margaret Kreutzer nee Knoll.

2. He was a blacksmith, and is known for the iron crosses he made. Today scholars call him a "folk artist"; some of his iron crosses are still in the Victoria cemetery. The last cross he made was used as his marker. He also made the cross that marks his father's grave Franz Knoll.

3. He at times acted as a dentist, yet when he pulled his own tooth, it got infected which led to his death.

4. He also was a proprietor of a meat market and small restaurant.

5. His Naturalization Papers said: he emigrated to the US from Bremien, Germany on 2/20/1892, and arrived in the US at the port of New York on 3/5/1892. He had it close, it was arrival date of March 10, 1892.

6. Filed to become a citizen November 5, 1894, Hays City, Kansas, Ellis County.

7. He spoke, read and wrote in German, but could not read or write English.

8. His witnesses for Naturalization were: B. M Dreiling, Editor, Hays City, Kansas and J. C. Kippes, Reg. of Deeds, Hays City, Kansas

9. His daughter Margaret said that before they lived in Victoria, Kansas, John and Anna lived in WaKeeney, Kansas.
