Roy Winstead, Long in Photo Business, Dies
Heart Attack Suffered While on Duty at Campbell's


David Roy Winstead, 63, of 5509 Alston Drive, one of Norfolk's foremost camera and photographic authorities who had been in the business for nearly four decades, died of a heart attack yesterday at 10:45 a.m. while at work at the Campbell Photo Service and Supply Corporation, 44th Street and Killam Avenue. His health had been failing in recent years.
A native of Wilson, N.C., he served his photographic apprenticeship with his father, the late Francis Marion Winstead.
He cam here to live in 1907 and six years later accepted a position with the G. Leslie Hall Optical Company camera department, where he remained until the camera department was acquired by Owen Campbell and Company two years ago. He then became manager of the wholesale department of Campbell's Photo Service.
He attended North Carolina State College for three years.
Active in Fraternal Work
He had been active in fraternal club work a good many years, being a charter member of the Norfolk Lions Club and its secretary more than a decade until he vacated the office in 1936. He also was a past Exalted Ruler of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B.P.O. Elks, and attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
His wife, Mrs. Ethyl Carr Winstead, died last March 4.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. J. Warren White, Jr., of Norfolk and Mrs. George William Drennen, of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Dorothy Lee Drennen, of Niagara Falls, and Dorothy Lee White of Norfolk; two grandsons, J. Warren White, III, and William Carr White, both of Norfolk; and one brother, George Winstead, of Rocky Mount, N.C.
The body was removed to the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, where rosary services will be held today at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
