Johann was born in Heutensbach, Backnang, Germany. In 1867 he immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Louisville, Kentucky. He married Annie Link and they had at least five children: Anna (Annie), John, Hattie, Edgar and Marie. He was a tanner in a tannery. John died of a crushed chest as a result of an elevator accident. He was 67.
