Franz Madera was born on March 10, 1816 in Telecli, Bohemia. Franc (Franz or Frank) left Bohemia with 3 other families in the summer of 1854 to come to America. A burdensome government, heavy taxation and compulsory military service led them to seek freedom and land in this country. They left for Germany by boat arriving at Bremen, Germany. The trip from Germany to the US was $50 per person. Franc's family arrived in New York October 10, 1854. They traveled by train to Buffalo, NY and got on another boat headed to Detroit, back on a train to Chicago, then a train to Milwaukee. Finally they hired a driver and wagons to carry 30 people at $25 per person with luggage to Watertown, WI.

Pooling their money, the families were able to buy 80 acres of land, including the crop, 3 log houses, 6 cows and 12 hogs. Three years later the Madera's sold their share of the farm and moved to Concord, WI, where they lived for 8 years. And when their family began to get larger they finally settled in Mitchel County, Iowa northeast of St. Ansgar. Franc was a shoemaker, dealer in lumber, made linen cloth and farmed his 40 acres. He was married to Anna Portl and they had 4 children. Anna died in October of 1849 in Bohemia. He then married Ana Jonas and went on to have 8 more children.
