Ivis Meitler, 103, of Salina, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014. She was born Sept. 20, 1910, the daughter of Clyde and Maude Peck, in the Rosette community near Sylvan Grove. She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School and attended Hays Teachers’ College. She taught in Lincoln County rural schools, with all eight grades in one room. She attended Brown Mackie Business School, in Salina, and worked at Linck’s Drug Store, and as an office assistant at Long Oil Co. She became interested in music at a young age and after teaching herself to play the piano, she played for services, at age 14, at Rosette Evangelical Church. She worked at Mary Ellen Rathbun and Seymour- Silver Dance Schools. She was dance instructor at Ivis Meitler Dance Studio for 28 years, where she taught children 3 to 7 years of age. She sold her dance studio to Mary Joyce Klotzbach. After a few years of retirement, she worked for Mary Joyce.
She married Oscar Mei- tler in 1938 and they had one daughter, Sherry. Ivis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the Trinity Choir, a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Women’s Book Study Group, was a church pianist until age 101, and played piano at Salina Presbyterian Manor, where she lived, until age 103.
Ivis moved to Salina Presbyterian Manor in 1996. She was a member of Resident Council, librarian, receptionist, country storekeeper, chairman of host and hostess committee, pianist for chapel services, and played piano daily during the noon meal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Maude Peck; husband, Oscar; daughter, Sherry, and husband, Larry Tarrant; three brothers, Edwin Peck, Leslie Earl Peck and Wendell Peck; six sisters, Helen Vonada, Enid Peck, Wilda Dillet, Ruth Morray, Lila Hanzlicek and Vera Meyer.
Her survivors are two grandchildren, Bruce Tarrant and wife Theresa, of Wallingford, Pa., and Erica Tarrant, of Seattle; five great-grandchildren, Emilie, Chance, Gillian, Owen and Ursula; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Salina, with the Rev. Shawn Deterding and the Rev. Wendall Haubien officiating. Private inurnment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, Salina. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 702 S. Ninth, Salina, or to Salina Presbyterian Manor, 2601 E. Crawford, Salina.
