Beloved son of John D. Layman and Nancy nee( Fitts Layman BORN IN TENN.)
Thomas J. was raised on a farm until his fathers death in 1859.He first started teaching school for a short period, in 1861 began to study law under the watchful eye of Judge A.D. Duff of this county.
He enlisted in Company C. Eighteenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry for one year.He was discharged due to a disability in early 1862.
In late 1862 Thomas J. Laymen was admitted to the state bar of Illinois.
On May 14, 1868 he was united in marriage to
Elizabeth R. Leman, daughter of John Leslie Leman and Martha C.nee JONES(born in Monroe county Ill) Leman also of Illinois. *****
Together this couple built a successful farm and large home.
