Rufus is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen Allen Houchins. He graduated from Greenville (WV) High School and Concord College, Athens, WV where he earned a bachelor's degree and played basketball. He earned his Master's degree at West Virginia University, Morgantown. He began his career in education in 1940, teaching math and coaching the 6-man football team at Union (WV) High School. He served in the U S Army from 1943 to 1945, when he returned to teaching and coaching at Greenville High School, teaching math and biology and coaching 6-man football, basketball, and baseball. In 1959, he became principal of Greenville High, where he remained through the reduction to a junior high school in 1967, until his retirement in 1980. He and Helen operated Wayside store and enjoyed WVU sports, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and running. He ran competitively well into his 70's in more than 25 races, and walked when he could no longer run for exercise, and turned to a stationary bike when his legs wouldn't permit walking. He rode that bike well into his 90's.
