Obituary:
FINDLEY MATTHEWS, one of the most respected and aged citizens of our county, died suddenly of heart disease, at his home near the old Baker Furnace in East Wheatfield township, on Thursday night last. He was born and raised in the house in which he died, and was a son of two of the earliest settlers in the county—Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Matthews, who settled there from Armagh, Ireland. His wife died about twelve years since, and he is survived by three sons—Robert, of Altoona; John, who is single and at home, and George H., who is a merchant at Blacklick. Since the death of his wife his daughter Jennie kept house for him until last November, when she died of pneumonia, and since that time his niece, Mrs. Simpson, of Blairsville, has been attending to the household duties. Deceased was a brother of Mrs. Isabella Lapsley, of Nebraska, aged eighty-nine years; Mrs. Isaac Rodgers, whose home adjoins the old homestead, aged eighty-seven; Mrs. Eliza Kennedy, of Iowa, aged eighty-five, and Mr. Archibald Matthews, of Indiana county, aged sixty-six. The ages of the three sisters and brother and the deceased aggregated over four hundred years. Mr. Matthews united with the Armagh Presbyterian church when he was a boy fifteen years of age, and lived a christian life until death.
