For a time he operated a cabinet shop and general store in Melrose and made caskets there. During this time the price of a walnut casket was 25 dollars.
His first wife was Margaret Jane Beattie (1829-Jan. 30, 1860) who is buried in Trinity Cemetery, Lambeth with her Beattie relatives.
They were married Dec. 26, 1848 with witnesses Andrew Ferguson and another Margaret Beattie. They had two known children, Janet E. "Nettie" (Apr.27,1855-Dec.6,1927) became the second wife of David Waugh (Jan. 11, 1855-Mar. 23, 1932) both of whom are buried in Melrose with her father.
The second child was James A. Ferguson (b. ca 1857) but no additional information has been located for him.

After Alexander's wife's death, he moved his children back to Melrose and married Margaret Asher Simpson (Feb. 5, 1845-Oct. 23, 1913) on Jan.23,1866.
She came to the area from Scotland in 1854 with her parents, James and Janet (Robb) Simpson. She is buried in Mount Pleasant, London in a plot with her mother and a sister.
