James “Thurman” Hill, 89, of Nyssa, Oregon, passed away at home on Sept 2, 2014.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two daughters, Marcie Hill Slone, of Ontario and Darlene (Dale) Stephens, of Nyssa; grandsons: Brian Allendar, of Ontario, Kevin Allendar, of Parma, Beau Bouton, of Kuna, and Andrew Stephens, of Meridian; granddaughters: Jennifer Fish, of Meridian and Stefanie McGowan, of Medford, OR; five great-granddaughters and five great-grandsons.

Thurman was born in Kimberly, Idaho Sept 7, 1924 to Hyrum “Slim” Hill and Cora Smith Hill. Shortly after, Thurman relocated to the Nyssa area where he attended the Nyssa schools and graduated in 1943.

After graduation Thurman joined the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in the European theater until 1946 at the end of WWII. In his short amount of time in the US Army, Thurman walked from the tip of Italy to Switzerland and received numerous army medals, including the Purple Heart for a wound sustained in 1945.

On his return to Nyssa, Thurman married Mildred Adams, his wife of 67 years, and returned to his love of farming; spending the next 25 years working for Mann farms in Parma.

In 1980 he and Mildred moved back to the family farm and semi-retired, where he began his hobby of raising cattle (full time). During this time Thurman was an active member of the Owyhee Riding Club and Oregon Trail Grange. He spent much time at the rodeo grounds, working and helping the production of the Nyssa Nite Rodeo.

Thurman loved to hunt and fish. He would walk for miles and fish for hours, much to Mildred's dismay as he would not return at times until well after dark. He passed his love of hunting and fishing to his grandsons, teaching them all he could whenever he had the opportunity. There are many stories to be told of the one that got away.

In later years Thurman enjoyed spending anytime he could with his great-grandchildren. The smile on his face when everyone would show up is not something the family will soon forget.

A viewing will be held at Lienkaemper Chapel in Nyssa, Oregon on September 7th from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral will be Monday, September 8th at 2:00 pm, with graveside services immediately following. The family will be providing refreshments at the Nyssa Senior Center @ 316 Good Ave. afterwards where all can meet and share stories.

Thurman was preceded in death by his mother and father, mother and father-in-law, Lloyd Adams and Iva Adams, and one grandson, Adam Slone.
