Frontier peace officer. He was a Deputy United States Marshal who worked out of the U.S. District Court at Ft. Smith, Arkansas, under the famous "Hanging Judge," Isaac C. Parker. Tolbert's beat as a marshal included the rough Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma. Among his exploits was the manhunt for Ned Christie , the famous Cherokee renegade who was suspected of murdering another marshal, Daniel Maples . Tolbert and his posse cornered Christie at his stronghold in the Indian Nations and, when Christie refused to surrender, the lawmen dynamited the reinforced walls of Christie's hideout. Christie was forced out into the open where he was gunned down by Tolbert and his men. The town of Paden, Oklahoma is named for Tolbert, making it the only town in the U.S. named for a deputy U.S. Marshal.
