There is a new angel in heaven this week. Vincent Abate, age 84, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 1st. He spend his last hours surrounded by his loving family before he passed peacefully in his sleep.

Vincent was born on October 26, 1929 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He was a proud Teamster and worked in the trucking business for almost 40 years. In 1949, he was a groomsman in his cousin Connie Monfiletto's wedding and was paired up with a beautiful bridesmaid who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

On May 10, 1952, Vincent married Josephine Svet at Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York. Their honeymoon was an exciting road trip through 19 states, and it was also the start of their traveling adventures.

About seven years later, the happy couple bought their first home in Spotswood, New Jersey, where they raised their two daughters, Debbie and Donna.

Each summer, Vincent took one month vacation from work and traveled cross country with his family...exploring 49 states and making sure that each motel his family stayed at had a swimming pool for his girls.

When he turned 58, Vincent saw that too many of his friends were having health problems by waiting too long to retire. So he decided to park his 18-wheeler for good and retire to a place where he wouldn't have to shovel snow and wear long underwear.

Vincent took Josephine on another cross country trip and landed in Oceanside, California. There, within a year, he'd been within miles of both of his daughters, who also moved to the West Coast.

One day, while he was watching QVC, Vincent was intrigued when he saw his first metal detector and decided to purchase one and try it on for size on the Southern California beaches. For almost 14 years, Vincent rose early in the morning and walked several miles to see what treasures he could find. He was so well known on the Oceanside beaches that he was intervied several times in the local newspaper.

There were two things that Vincent loved most: his family and making people laugh. His family invites you to celebrate his life today by hugging a family member and making someone smile.

Vincent is survived by his wife of 62 years--Josephine Abate, his daughters Debbie Abate and Donna Abate, his sister Christine Smith from Tennessee, his sister Rose Laffey from New Jersey, his cousin Connie Grabowski from New York, his cousin Jimmy Baldanza from Florida and his many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, October 10th at the Mission San Luis Rey Chapel In Oceanside, California.
