James G. Matthews, a former mayor of Collinsville, died of complications at 11 o’clock Wednesday night at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis where he had been a patient for three weeks.
He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Matthews, who resided at 715 West Clay street, was elected mayor of the city in 1912, serving under the aldermanic form of government. Prior to that time he had served a number of terms as alderman and was known as one of the leaders of the council. During his administration as mayor the Vandalia street brick paving was laid and it was during his term that the city purchased its first motor fire truck. After his retirement as mayor he continued to be an active participant in civic affairs.
Mr. Matthews spent his entire life in Collinsville. His father [William J. Matthews] also was a mayor of the city. The family is well known, not only here but throughout the entire county.
Surviving relatives are four daughters, Mrs. Jule [Julius] [Florence] Blake of Edwardsville, Mrs. Fern O’Guin, Mrs. E. [Edwin] J. [Julius] [Mary] Mueller and Miss Amy E. Matthews of Collinsville; two sons, Leo A. [Allen] Matthews and W. W. [William Walker] Matthews of Collinsville, and one brother, Charles L. Matthews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon from the Schroeppel Undertaking Co. funeral home. Rev. Percy Ray, pastor of the first Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in St. John’s Cemetery. Collinsville (IL) Herald January 25, 1935
