His birth year on his grave marker lists 1898 but in the 1900 census, he is listed as about 8 years old. In his WWI and WWII registration records, he gives his birth date as June 19, 1890.

He married Hazel Sutton on Nov. 7, 1914 at Phillipsburg, N.J. per records of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg. They evidently separated by 1920 as she listed herself as single in this census and remarried two more times. Russell continues to list himself as married in the 1920 and 1940 census records.
