George Washington "Babe" Maynard was born in July 1871 in Rich Creek, Wayne County, WV, to Isaac Maynard and Nancy J Lycans.

He married Sally Smith on October 18, 1908. Sally Smith was born on January 24, 1889, in Wayne County, WV to Hiram Jesse Smith and America Robertson. They had four sons (Elvie, Sonnie, Jay C, Charles) and three daughters (Mary E, Carrie, Brookie) together.

He died in February 1925 at the age of 53, and was buried on Humpy Ridge (Humpy Knob, head of Big Branch & Mathis Ridge.) with his father Isaac Maynard and brother Vester Maynard in unmarked graves.
