THE LEBANON ENTERPRISE, page 1, Friday, January 6, 1922. MAN IS SLAIN NEAR LORETTO. Jim Hill Who Killed K. Abell Last Thursday A Not Apprehended.

K. Abell, a resident of the western part of the county, was shot and instantly killed late last Thursday afternoon by Jim Hill who lives in the same section. The tragedy occurred between Holy Cross and Loretto, and according to the best information available was without provocation. Hill disappeared soon after the shooting and has not yet been arrested. However it is believed he will soon be taken into custody.

Abell, Fee Gilkey, and Martin Thomas had returned from a woodland and Abell was in the act of hitching his horse to a vehicle when Hill, carrying a shotgun, came upon the scene. Hill who had, it is said, been drinking asked Abell for a drink. The latter is said to have replied that he would give it to him just as soon as he got his horse hitched up. Gilkey and Thomas who were only a few feet away are reported to have heard Abell make the remark. Hill is said to have replied with an oath that he wanted the liquor at once and was going to have it. As he opened fire before placing it to his shoulder. The load struck inflicting a a fearful wound. He dropped to the ground dead. Gilkey and Thomas stated after the tragedy they heard no argument between Abell and Hill, and were astounded astounded when Hill raised his gun and fired.

Abell was about 28 years old and is survived by his widow, who was a daughter of Charlie Miles, and three young children. He was buried at Chicago Saturday morning, the Rev. N. Werner conducting the funeral services at St. Francis church. Richard Abell, who is employed at Wheatley & Smith's garage in this city was a brother.

Hill is said to be about 60 years old. He has been living in the western part of the county for the past three or four years. It is said he came to the county from Boyle county.

"Martin Thomas, a half-brother of the slain man, and Fee Gilkey, a brother-in-law, both of whom were present when the shooting occurred, were the principal witnesses for the Commonwealth, but their testimony threw little light on the affair."
