The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs: Print Collection, The New York Public Library: Augustus H. Abbett. Engraver John Chester Buttre, New York (1821-1893). A.J. Grayson's 1875 "Spirit of 1861: History of the Sixth Indiana Regiment", page 5, states "[Captain] Abbett, after the [1861] Three Months' Campaign, was made Major of the 67th Regiment, and was killed on the breastworks at Munfordsville, Ky., in that desperate fight with Bragg's army."

Sign at Battle of Munfordville, KY: Fort Craig - This 5-pointed star fort saw the fiercest fighting of the Civil War Battle of Munfordville, Sept. 14, 1862. Forces of the 7th, 9th, & 29th Mississippi Intantry, Richard's Battalion of Sharpshooters, & Garrity's Section of Ketchum's Battery assaulted the works from three sides, only to withdraw in confusion. The Union defenders, the 67th Indiana Infantry under command of Colonel John T. Wilder, defended their position with small arms and two cannons. The regimental leader, Major Augustus H. Abbett was shot dead from teh ramparts as he rallied his men. The 34-star Union flag that flew here was perforated 146 times be rebel bullets. Despite their efforts, within two days they surrendered their fortifications to COnfederate General Braxton Bragg's overwhelming forces.

Battle of Munfordville, KY is also known as the Battle of Green River, KY.
