Mary and her two older sisters, Harriet Mae (1861) and America Holton (1863) Thompson were raised by their maternal grandparents, Dr. James and America Ford, and their mother's two sisters, Allena and Nancy Anna Ford, until Capt. Thompson remarried when Mary was 2½ years old.
Mary attended local the Wabash City Schools and studied at St. Mary's of the Woods Academy for Girls near Terre Haute, Indiana in 1881-82. She was a member of the Wabash Christian Church.
Mary was stricken at age 17 with an incurable case of consumption from which she died within a few weeks.
Died at age 17 years, 4 months, 2 days.
