ADM. RICHARD NICHOLS Decorated submarine officer, 81

Rear Adm. Richard E. Nichols, a decorated World War II submarine officer, died Sunday at Cloisters of La Jolla convalescent hospital after a long battle with emphysema. He was 81.

Adm. Nichols was awarded the Silver Star as an engineering officer on the submarine Grayback in the South Pacific. He later commanded the submarine Bashaw during a 30-year Naval career that began at the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1934.

A native of Coronado, Adm. Nichols was the son of one of the first telegraphers at Hotel del Coronado.

After retiring from the Navy, he worked briefly for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. Seeking a drier climate for his emphysema, Adm. Nichols and his wife, Louise, moved shortly thereafter to Palm Springs. They settled in La Jolla in 1977.

In addition to his wife, Adm. Nichols is survived by a daughter, Susan Cook of Scripps Ranch; a son, Richard of Mount Helix; and two grandchildren.

Private services are scheduled tomorrow at El Camino Memorial Park.
