Born on Feb. 2, 1897 in North Apollo, he was the son of Winchester and Mary Leck Stitt.
He had lived in the Vandergrift area all his life and was employed by the Vandergrift plant of U.S. Steel for 43 years prior to his retirement in 1956.
He was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Vandergrift.
Survivors include his wife, Violet Cook Stitt; one son, James W. Stitt, Issaquah, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Isabelle) Schroeder, Brookville Heights, Ohio, Mrs. Phillip (Helen) Stitt, Greenbelt, Md., Mrs. Clyde (Retha) Young, Latrobe and Mrs. Raymond (Aleen) Pearson, Hershey; 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Okie Keirn, Latrobe.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday in the Dunmire-Kerr Funeral Home, 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, where a service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Naomi Ross, in charge. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo.
