Dies In South Dakota
Dryden, Dec. 2 - Mrs. Katie Fitch Miller died Friday, Nov. 26, after a few days illness, in Mitchell, South Dakota. Mrs. Miller and her husband moved from 42 years' residence in Iowa Falls, Iowa to reside with their daughter, Mrs. Ralph Miller, Mitchell, S.D.
Mrs. Miller had been in failing health for a few years, but was only really ill four days before her death in her 83rd year.
Mrs. Miller was born in Dryden, July 14, 1861, in the Baker house, as it was called formerly, now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan on West Main street. Her parents, Dr. William Fitch and his wife, Mrs. Urania Everett Fitch, purchased the house where Miss Elizabeth Fulkerson now lives and lived there until September 14, 1893, when Dr. Fitch died. Mrs. Fitch died the following winter.
Mrs. Miller attended the Dryden Union School and graduated with the class of 1879. After her completion of the Dryden school course, she taught the school on East Hill. At least three of the pupils of that period are living in Dryden.
On March 15, 1887, occurred the marriage of the youngest Fitch daughter, Miss Katie, to Archibald Miller of Dryden. They lived in Dryden for a few years, then they lived in Wakonda, S.D., and settled in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Prior to then Mr. Miller was in the firm of Bower & Miller; the store was the present site of the Wayside Furniture store.
Mr. and Mrs. Miller lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where Mr. Miller engaged in the lumber business until 1900. They then moved to Iowa Falls. There Mr. Miller carried on his lumber business for 30 years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Miller were members of the Congregational church in Iowa Falls, and Mrs. Miller was an active member of the D.A.R. there.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband of Mitchell; two daughters, Miss Blanche C. Miller of Kent, O., and Mrs. Ralph Miller of Mitchell; and a son, Archibald W. Miller of New Cumberland, Pa.; two grandsons, Archibald, aviation cadet, Selman Field, Monroe, Pa., and Daniel Fitch Miller of Mitchell.
Dr. Bernard L. Rice conducted the funeral service in the Perkins funeral parlor on Tuesday morning, Nov. 30. Interment was in Green Hills cemetery.
