Manufacturor, owner of the Morristown based Speedwell Iron Works. Husband of Bethia Youngs, and the father of inventor Alfred Vail and Congressman George Vail. His iron works produced railroad engine parts by the 1830s. His son Alfred was co-inventor of the telegraph and the actual inventor of the modern Morse code that utilized the alphabet (Samuel Morse had created a more complicated version that required looking up codes in a book). Alfred convinced his father to invest $2,000.00 in Morse's research.
