MATTHEW E. McDEVITT
Matthew E. McDevitt of 137 Baxter St., Rutland, father of Sister Margaret McDevitt, S.S.J., of Bennington, died at the age of 80 Monday at Rutland Hospital after a short illness.
A native of Dorset, he was born May 5, 1894 to James and Anna (Phalen) McDevitt, was a veteran of the First World War, and was a co-owner and operator of the McDevitt Brothers Grocery in Rutland for a half century, retiring in 1971. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church in Rutland, belonged to the Knights of Columbus in Rutland and was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his widow, the former Margaret Mahoney; and his daughter in Bennington; he leaves two sons, Joseph M. of Litchfield, Conn., and Matthew J. of Rutland; two other daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Creed of Rutland and Mrs. Katherine Barrett of Granby, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Sister Mary Matthew of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Rutland, Miss Anna McDevitt and Miss Mary McDevitt, both also of Rutland; many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 10 am Thursday at St. Peter's Church, where the liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland.
Friends may pay respects at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm Wednesday. The wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 pm Wednesday.
