John Bailey was born in Stuttgart Germany to J.C. and Sophia Bailey. He immigrated to the United States in 1849, enlisted on 17 October 1864 in the 152nd Illinois Infantry which was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois, and mustered into Federal service on February 28, 1865, for a one-year enlistment. The 152nd garrisoned the line of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad and later Memphis, Tennessee. The regiment mustered out on September 9, 1865. He came to South Dakota in 1898 working as a farm laborer and living with his sister Helena Carolyn Bailey and her husband Michael Eberlein. John never married and continued to live with his sister until the time of his death in 1928. His sister is buried next to him.
