Martin Smith Jr was the son of Martin Smith Sr & Margaret unknown.

Martin Smith and family moved about 1800 from Prince Edward County, VA to the present site of Wurtland, Greenup County, KY. He was very wealthy and had large holdings of land, money, and slaves.

Adjutant Martin Smith was paid for six months service in the Revolutionary War on 21 Dec. 1778, Prince Edward Co, VA.

After the Revolution, Martin was listed as a Militia Lieut in the Light Horse Company in Order Book June Ct 1785 of Prince Edward County.

In the History of Greenup County, Kentucky, Page 259 (full source below), in the section of Martin Smith, it states, "He is buried at the point of the hill at Wurtland across from the old John McConnell home."

In the will of Martin Smith written 6 August 1822 & proven 11 Nov 1822 in Greenup County, Kentucky, he named children Robert, Woodson, John W, Bird, Creed, William, Martin P, Elizabeth, Nancy & Samuel. Robert was probably deceased then since father Martin left money to Robert's children.

McConnell Cemetery was listed in 1977 for the Kentucky Historical Survey by Jake and Bertha Savage with five identified graves and several unidentified. Martin Smith Jr and Nancy Price were listed as buried there.

On July 16, 2001, Lorene Hern and Kathleen Virgin-Kenney relocated the cemetery. The stones had fallen and were almost covered. The McConnell and Hollister grave stones were the only ones that could be identified.
