Note: "With Chhickasaw approval, Army Captain Isaac Guion erected the United States first garrison in the mid-Mississippi Valley in October 1797 at the site that is now Memphis, TN. Initially named Fort Adams, the stockade was later named Fort Pike. Fort Pike was abandoned when Fort Pickering was constructed on a higher part of the bluff.
