Blackjack 'Jack" Fryer, age seven, passed away unexpectedly at the Green Tree Animal Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky on Thursday, October 16, 2014, from complications during exploratory surgery for heretofore unknown cancer of the spleen. Jack received the most excellent of veterinarian care and attention at the time of his passing under the extremely compassionate and skillful hands Dr. Joe Yocum along with the able assistance of Angela Byer.

Jack, who appeared to be a mix of German Shepherd and Chow, was the precious dog of my brother, Billy Dee Fryer. Jack lived with the Fryer family on their farm in Versailles, Kentucky where he shared the barn with other sweet creatures who are also loved dearly by the Fryers.

Jack's early years were fraught with problems and many disappointments. But on September 9, 2010, at the age of three, Jack was adopted from the Woodford Humane Society by Billy Dee following many hours spent together 'getting to know one another'. At that time, the best part of Jack's life lay ahead of him.

Being beautiful, intelligent, and extremely compassionate Jack immediately set about, along side Billy Dee, working tirelessly toward a goal of becoming a top-notch, A-Number-One therapy dog. Jack's instruction began with basic obedience training at Best Friends Obedience School. That was followed by further training at the National Animal Assisted Crisis Response Group. After succeeding in all his efforts, Jack was registered by AKC as a Certified Therapy Dog and Canine Good Citizen. Following his schooling and accreditation Jack joined the Central Kentucky Love On A Leash therapy group and began working hard and excelling at a job he truly loved.

Jack ultimately became a favorite at many nursing homes and hospitals where, in his capacity as therapy dog, he showered unbelievable love, comfort, attention, and lots of licks and kisses on many wonderful individuals throughout the last few years. Those individuals in turn repaid Jack with gratitude, hugs, and their attention which they heaped upon him, along with treats and the wonderful touches of loving hands. Jack welcomed their repayment with much joy.

Working with his current therapy group, Paws For Christ (previously known as Bluegrass of Kentucky Love On A Leash), Jack's performed his final official therapy visit, his 91st in less than four years, last Monday, October 13, 2014 at the Cardinal Hill Hospital in Lexington. Jack left us knowing he was loved and feeling pride and joy in the wonderful job he enjoyed so much and performed so well.

There are not enough words to express how much Jack is going to be missed by everyone who ever had the good fortune to meet him. Particularly of course, his loving owner and best friend, Billy Dee, is going to miss Jack more than can even be realized at this early time following his passing.

Rather than try to put those thoughts into my own words, here is the message that my brother composed to send out to his and Jack's many friends and relatives letting them know of his loss and Jack's untimely and all-too-early passing:

EVERYONE: IT IS WITH A SAD HEART THAT I TELL YOU THAT MY BEST FRIEND "JACK" PASSED AWAY THIS AFTERNOON AT APPROXIMATELY 4:00 PM. JACK WAS IN EMERGENCY SURGERY FOR A SPLEEN THAT HAD RUPTURED DUE TO CANCER. "JACK" PASSED DURING HIS SURGERY. I WAS VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN BY HIS SIDE THE ENTIRE TIME DURING THE SURGERY. I WAS ABLE TO WITNESS AN UNBELIEVABLE EFFORT PERFORMED BY DR. JOE YOCUM AND HIS ASSISTANT ANGELA BYER. ONCE JACK BEGIN TO LABOR IN HIS BREATHING AND HEART RATE DR. YOCUM PERFORMED MANUAL CPR ON JACK FOR OVER 2O MINUTES. THE COMPASSION AND EFFORT THAT I WITNESSED WAS SOMETHING I WILL NEVER FORGET. WE HUMANS SHOULD BE SO LUCKY TO HAVE A DR. LIKE JOE YOCUM. "JACK" WILL BE MISSED BY ALL OF HIS FRIENDS AND THOSE HE PUT A SMILE ON THEIR FACE, HE HAD JUST COMPLETE HIS NINETY FIRST VISIT IN LESS THAN 4 YEARS AS A THERAPY DOG. PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR "JACK" AS I KNOW HE WILL BRING JOY IN THE WONDERFUL PLACE HE NOW RESIDES. I SAY "GOOD BYE" TO ONE OF THE BEST FRIENDS I HAVE EVER KNOWN IN MY 63 YEARS, RIP MY BOY "JACK" ~~ BILLY DEE FRYER

To my nephew Jack I would add; I loved you more than you know. Please bring your sweet smile and your own brand of happiness to your new home and all you meet there. Always realize that you will be missed much more than you can imagine. "Morning" and "Layla" send their good-byes; they will surely miss your occasional visits.

Jack was cremated and his ashes will remain with his family, residing beside of those of Mandy ‘Lu-Lu' Fryer, Kate ‘Kay-Kay' Fryer, and Drake. Jack's heart and soul will forever abide at Rainbow Bridge where after meeting up with Drake and Hope Fryer, he will finally get to meet 'Lu-Lu' and 'Ka-Ka' where the Fryer pets can have a reunion and play joyously together forever.

Sincere thanks to D. Singleton Shell for sponsoring Jack's memorial!
