Garnet Swiger Ashcraft

SHINNSTON — Garnet Swiger Ashcraft, 81, of Rt. 1, Wallace, died at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born on October 8, 1927, in Talkington Fork, Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Anthony L. and Goldie Ellen Trader Swiger.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Royal Ward Ashcraft, whom she married on June 30, 1950, and who died on June 28, 2007.

Mrs. Ashcraft is survived by her son, Wendell Royal Ashcraft, with whom she made her home; 2 grandchildren, Samantha and Sarah Ashcraft both of Wooster, OH; 2 great-grandchildren, Katelyn Marjorie Marie Ashcraft and Kaleb Alexander Ward Ashcraft; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Ashcraft was preceded in death by her 5 brothers, Edward, Clifford, Garmen, Garland, and Richard Swiger and her sister, Lucy Jane Hyde.

Her work experience included the Smithfield Store, Bill Gray’s Store at Wallace, and she worked for Gib Shuman at the State Food Store. She also worked for Roy and John Cool at Cool’s Market in Wallace and the Robinson’s Filling Station at Center Point.

She was a member of the Senior Citizens of Wallace and the Smith Baptist Church in Wallace. She also attended the Fairview Baptist Church at Five Points.

Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, on Friday from 2-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 13 at noon with the Rev. Bill Keener officiating. Interment will follow at the Tenmile I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Wallace.
