BUTLER, Evelyn (Dickens) "Penonie," of Ann Arbor, Mich., formerly of Colonial Heights, Va., age 92, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
She was born July 22, 1920 in Scotland Neck, N.C., the daughter of Helen B. and Leslie Cleveland Dickens. She was very proud that she graduated as valedictorian of her senior class at Scotland Neck High in 1939. Evelyn was married to Thomas E. Butler, who preceded her in death in 2002. Evelyn retired from the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond, Va. She was known as Granny Butler by her coworkers and chose not to retire until 1992 when she was 72, because she enjoyed her work and her work family. She received many performance awards during her employment at the Depot. She loved to write poems and there were many occasions where one of her poems was the highlight of someone's day. She moved to Michigan to be near her daughter, Scarlett Bennett, after a bad fall in 2004. She remained the spunky, sassy and loving person she always was while dealing with dementia. She was well cared for and loved by the staff of Arbor Care, Mariana, Sue, Betty, Simona, Gigi and Marietta. She had a one-of-a-kind personality and the ability to engage all her family and friends and delight them with her antics. We all will miss the glitz and glam she wore so well because she was "Penonie."
Survivors include her son, Thomas R. (Cathy) Butler of Colonial Heights, Va.; daughter, Scarlett (Jay) Bennett of Pinckney, Mich.; sister-in-law, Nancy Dickens of Scotland Neck, N.C.; three granddaughters, Kimberly (Ted) Kuhns of Dexter, Mich., Kristen (Jim) Sibert of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Myndi (Chad) Eilert of Prince George, Va.; grandson, Rhett (Debbie) Butler of Raleigh, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kyle Kuhns, Joey and Danny Sibert, Megan and Andy Butler and Emily Anne Eilert; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Beatrice Helen Johnson; two brothers, William Lorraine and Donald Cleveland Dickens; and two granddaughters, Sherri Butler Liverman and Donna Michelle Butler Craig. Evelyn always said she "had a good life and was ready to meet her Jesus." Her family is at peace knowing she got her birthday wish this year.
