Elizabeth was born in the town of Elizabeth, N.J. to Edwin Barlow Downs and his wife Margaret E. Timmons. The family moved to Iowa before 1870 and moved back to northern N.J. in the early 1880s. She married Matthias Ludlow in Newark in April 1889. They were the parents of Leroy, Ralph, and Chester Ludlow. An obituary has not yet been found for her.
