Born May 23, 1937 in Bland County, VA, he was a son of the late James and Luella Lambert Akers. He was a member of Clear Fork Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Jake worked for over 30 years at Overnite Transportation until his retirement. After retirement, he worked part-time for A-1 Auction and Discount until his illness. He enjoyed working in his garden, mowing, and he loved to spend time with his family at Myrtle Beach.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Kimberlin Akers, of the home; one son, Gary E. Akers of Rocky Gap, VA; two sisters, Mary Puckett and Lucille Burton, both of Rocky Gap; sister-in-law, Mary Akers; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Sue Shrewsbury, and Rosie and Clifton Warden; several special nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Friday October 24, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday October 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Phillip Moran and Rev. Raymond Klaiber officiating.
Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where Jimmy Lambert, Mike Puckett, Eddie Puckett, Darrell Kidd, and Mike Arnold will serve as pallbearers.
Military graveside rites will be performed by the West Virginia Army Honor Guard.
