Joseph served during the Civil War as a Private in Co. E, 102nd Illinois Infantry Volunteers. He was involved in guarding the railroads in south-eastern Tennessee, spent six months in hospital, and later was on Gen. Sherman's March To The Sea. He fought at the Battle of Averysboro in North Carolina in the last days of the war.
