Candy, a German Shepherd, loved and protected "her" people from all threats, both real and potential. She was so protective of her children, she did not want us to run knowing, of course, that we might fall and get hurt. She would run along side us, jump up and gently take a wrist in her mouth so she could slow us to a walk. She could not stand to hear her children scream for any reason...and woe be to any person who was the cause.

The only people she did not like were our neighbor, father and the mail man. Our neighbor and Dad teased us children, which bothered her. Although she never growled at them, she showed her disapproval by lying her ears back when she thought they were going too far. Every day she barked at the mail man from the moment she saw his car then chased his car up the road as he was leaving. This was a very nice man but she would not allow him to exit his car unless someone in the family was within sight. If Mom was home alone when he had a package to deliver, he would honk the car horn and wait. As soon as Mom was at the door, Candy would allow him to exit his vehicle and walk to the house. We didn't think she would have bitten him...but he wasn't taking the chance.

This brave, protective dog would run into the house and hide under something during thunderstorms, fireworks or gunshots. Her favorite place was under Mom's wheelchair as if to say "It's your turn to protect me now." As soon as those big, bad noises stopped, she'd come out as if nothing had happened.

That final day, when I had to send her to the vet, I laid her on the seat beside my dad whose hand was laying on the seat. She reached over and licked his hand. She even allowed him to pet her. That was the only time I ever saw her show him any affection. I believe she knew what was coming and was saying "Thank you for sparing her."
