Maria was my Yiayia (grandmother in Greek). She died before I was born, yet my father told us so many stories about her that I felt I knew her.
While she lived a tragic life (losing five children in infancy or at birth, losing her husband very young, poverty, and financial hardship, and finally dying a horrific death), she never lost her gentleness nor her love for her children, especially her "baby boy" (my dad).
Thank you, Beth Hurd, for creating the memorial pages for her and my grandfather. As time and research allow, I'll be adding more of Yiayia's story.
