Maria Beaton was born on August 4, 1800 in Taunton, Somerset, England. Her baptism took place on July 19, 1801 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton. Her parents were William Beaton and Jane Burnell. Maria married John Cridge (parents unknown; Possibly Thomas Cridge and Sarah Channing) on March 19, 1826 at The Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England (The witnesses present were Matilda Beaton and John Beaton). They had two children named Edmund John (born on Sept. 1, 1828 in Taunton) and Alfred H. (born c. 1837 in New York). The Cridges came over to New York from Bristol, England on "Ship Superb". They arrived on May 11, 1832 and settled in Troy, NY. Maria died on May 4, 1858 in Troy.

1) Maria's parents were William Beaton (born c. 1768) and Jane/Joan Burnell (born c. 1774). They were married on June 15, 1797 at St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton. The Beatons lived on High Street and later on East Street in Taunton. Her father was a currier (a specialist in the leather processing industry) and faced bankruptcy in 1809. His last abode was East Street, and he was buried on April 7, 1830 at age 62 at St. Mary Magdalene. Maria's mother's last abode was also East Street. She was buried on Feb. 4, 1830 at age 56 at St. Mary Magdalene.

2) Maria's six known siblings were:

a) Mary Ann: Baptized on July 19, 1801.

b) William: Baptized on July 19, 1801 (should be 1805?); last abode was East Street; buried on June 27, 1824 at age 19 at St. Mary Magdelene.

c) Matilda: Born on Feb. 7, 1803; Bapt. on March 9, 1806. She married Samuel Sully (of Stogursey) on Nov. 19, 1822 at St. Mary Magdalene. Samuel was a cordwainer and shoemaker. The Sullys lived on East street. Their children were Henry Beaton (born c. 1823), Alfred William Beaton (born c. 1827), and Edwin John Beaton Sully (born c. 1831).

d) John: Born on June 17, 1809: Bapt. on Nov. 23, 1823; last abode was East Street; buried on Nov. 14, 1833 at St. Mary Magdelene.

e) Edmund: Bapt. Sept. 3, 1815; last abode was High Street; buried on Nov. 16, 1815 at infancy at St. Mary Magdelene.

f) Harriet Burnell: born on March 14, 1817(should be 1811?); bapt. on Nov. 23, 1823; last abode was East Street; buried on May 16, 1824 at age 12 at St. Mary Magdelene.

3) Perhaps Maria named her first child after her brother (Edmund) and second child after her nephew (Alfred William beaton Sully).
