Thompson was the eldest of eight known children born to James Ball and his wife, Cassa/Carrie Linday/Lindsey. Thompson was a farm laborer. He married Almira Hooker (born 1850 in Ohio). After Almira's death, Thompson married 1904/1905 to a widow named Elizabeth (nee Pierce); a daughter of William Pierce and his wife, Elizabeth. The union with Thompson was Elizabeth's third marriage; she was born 1837 in Indiana. Thompson's health began to fail. He was first admitted to the County Farm in 1919. Thompson was listed as a pauper and an inmate in the 1920 US Census (Thompson was also listed as residing with wife, Elizabeth in Middleport Township (Iroquois County), Illinois in same census). He was readmitted to the County Poor Farm on September 18, 1925 because he was old and feeble. Thompson was listed as a widower. His second wife, Elizabeth died on May 27, 1921 in Watseka, Illinois. Thompson's general health was listed as fair. His cause of death was endocarditis. Thompson was 93 years, 7 months and 29 days old when he died.
