Helen Rasmusson was born August 19, 1910, in Dazey, ND, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She received her Teaching Certificate from Valley City State Teachers College, which she attended for two years and taught rural school near Leal, ND, for one year.
She married Lyle Bender July 30, 1931, in Valley City. The couple farmed in the Dazey area from 1931 until 1953, when they moved to Cooperstown, where they continued farming until retiring in 1974. The couple continued to make their home on the farm. Lyle died December 10, 1983, Helen move into Cooperstown in the fall of 1984.
Helen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Dazey Homemakers Club and Our Saviour’s WELCA, all in Dazey. She was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cooperstown, being involved in the WELCA and Quilters Group, a member of the Clothespin Homemakers Club and President of the Women’s Mission Federation of the Mayville Conference. She also served as a delegate to the North Dakota Constitutional Convention.
She is survived by: five sons, Robert (Joan) of Grand Rapids, MN; Gerald (Carole) of Sacramento, CA; George (Sandra) of Kansas City, MO; Edward (Marjean) of Fort Collins, CO; David (Diane) of Marietta, GA; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister Henrietta Dotting of Valley City; two brothers, Robert of Palm Desert, CA; and Paul (Hilde) of Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one brother, Howard; and one sister, Margrette.
