Otto was born May 4, 1870 at Skjærbæk in Elverum, Norway, where his parents were lodgers. All of his siblings had been born at his parents' farm Gammelmoen, which the family had left before Otto's birth.

Otto was christened September 11, 1870. His mother Andrea died 11 days after he was christened, followed by his father Engebret early in 1871.

Their deaths left Otto, his two sisters and four brothers - children ranging in age from 17 to infant - without a home, and the children were dispersed to various households. Otto, for instance, was living on the farm Lille Finstad when he was confirmed at 15 (October 18, 1885).

When he was 19, Otto may have sailed for America on October 18, 1889. Although the person on this voyage could have been someone with the same name, it seems rather coincidental that the intended destination (Shawano County, Wisonsin) was the same as that of Otto's older siblings Oluf and Oline. In addition, this Otto's birthplace was also Elverum.

Otto's whereabouts after 1889 are being researched. There is an Otto and Anna Ingebretsen living in Chicago in the 1920 census, but he emigrated in 1880 and none of the children is named after Otto's parents or siblings. There is also an Otto Olson who owns 40 acres in Section 34 of Waukechon Township, Shawano County, in 1920:

There is also an Otto Olson who is a single, 70-year-old inmate in the Shawano County Home in Belle Plaine, Wisconsin in the 1940 census. This Otto was born in Norway and was naturalized. (Otto's sister sister Oline adopted their father's last name - Olsen - when she lived in the United States before she married, and possibly Otto did too.) The estimated birth year (1870) matches, but it is impossible to tell whether this is the same Otto, though the location (Shawano County) seems encouraging. The Shawano County Home was also known as Maple Lane and was at that time the county poorhouse. However, he is not buried at the Shawano County Home, either under the name Olson or Engebretsen.

There is an Otto Olson buried in the Shawano County Cemetery (Find a Grave Memorial 80040900). His birth/death dates are 1871 and 1859.
