Helen Alvarado, 82, of Maywood. Beloved wife of 62 years to the late Rev. Jesús Alvarado; loving mother of Benjamin, Marta, Manuel (Lourdes), Anita (James) Ward and David “Rick” (Melba) Alvarado, dear Grandma of David P, Richard, John, Benji, Enjoli, Camille, Jesse, David E., Melody, and Jonathan; great-grandma of eight.

Helen taught individuals from pre-school through College. She was a pioneer in bilingual education having written one of the first bilingual education resource guides and setting up a library of bilingual resource materials.

Helen loved her family and friends using her talents in sewing, cooking, crafting, and music to bring joy to everyone.

Helen accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when she was a child. Her greatest desire was to see others come to know Christ. As a young woman, she was active in her church. For over 18 years, she prayed for the salvation of her husband. After he accepted the Lord, Helen and Jesus ministered together, first through a family music ministry, then at Little Village Baptist Church of Chicago and, for the last 25 years at Alpha and Omega Baptist Church of Cicero. She served as treasurer, teacher, mentor, encourager, and director of Nuevo Amanecer, a group ministering to Latino women. Helen was a prayer warrior and her list of people for whom she prayed spanned the globe. Her testimony is one of faithfulness to Christ and perseverance in ministry.

Visitation Tuesday 3:00pm, service 7:00pm at Hursen Funeral Home, SW corner of Mannheim & Roosevelt Roads, Hillside. Funeral Wednesday, service at 10:00 am followed by the committal and internment at Glen Oak Cemetery.
