June 3, 1872, he arrived in New Orleans, LA along with his sister, Johanna, who was 17 years old, on the ship Constantia. It appears August and Johanna came to DeWitt County as soon as they arrived, since their brothers, Christian and Casper had settled in DeWitt/Lavaca County by that time.
August married Matilda Weber, the daughter of Jacob and Amanda Hoch Weber on Jan 6, 1876. He was 22 years old. They had thirteen children: Elizabeth, Minda, Charles,William, Martin, Rosa Mary, Valentine Clarence, John Anton, Viola, Gustav, Victor, Randolph and Lilly Vesta Hattenbach.
The 1880 Census shows he and Tilda living in Precinct 2, DeWitt, Texas; in 1900 they were living in Precinct 8, Gonzales, Texas and he was the Justice of the Peace. He was 47 years old. 1900 was the year their youngest child was born.
The 1910 and 1920 Census show him still residing in Gonzales County, Precinct 8 and still serving as the Justice of the Peace.
He died 10.20.1923 at the age of 70.
