Mrs. Mariam L. Downing, 87, passed away on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
She was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Struthers, the daughter of Paul E. and Stella L. Bailey Ellis.
Mariam was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She married Willam C. Downing on Nov. 28, 1946, and they were married for 55 years before Bill's passing on Dec. 17, 2001.
Mariam was retired from JCPenney's in the Eastwood Mall after working for many years in their women's clothing and dress departments.
Mariam was active in the North-Mar Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.
She and Bill belonged to the Cortland Conservation Club and enjoyed picnicking, boating on Mosquito Lake and family fishing trips to Canada.
She is survived by her five children, Diana (Frank) Martin, Denise (Charles) Burns, Debbie (Mark) Johns, Terrence L. (Barbara J.) Downing and William H. (Barbara A.) Downing; 13 grandchildren, Matt (Melanie) Martin, Ethan (Brittany) Martin, Halley (Brian) Cole, Beth Downing, Benjamin Downing, Bradley Downing, Shane Downing, Lara Downing, Abigail Johns, Emily Johns, Rachel Burns, Lindsey Burns and Logan Burns; three great-grandchildren, Fallon (Randy) Penrod, Alexis Cole and Aurora Cole; one great-great-grandchild, Klarke Penrod; one sister, OllaMae Canfield of California; and one sister-in-law, Grace Davis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William C. Downing; a granddaughter, Jennifer Martin; four brothers, LaValle Ellis, Lake Ellis, Dewey Ellis and Daniel Ellis; and two sisters, Edith Stiles and Vange Eisenbraun.
Funeral services will be held on at 11 a.m. Monday at North-Mar Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, with Pastor Myron Daum officiating. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Cortland.
