Doris "Ducky" Burke, 84, died April 7, 2006. She has left our lives, but not our hearts.

She was born Oct. 21, 1921, at Cedar Glen, the homestead of her grandparents, near Cardwell. She was the third child of longtime Jefferson County Sheriff John Williams and Ruth Mountjoy Williams. Family friend, Paul T. Smith, borrowing a line from a Scottish ballad, "Wee Dok Doris," changed Doris to Dok, then to Duck and that remained with her the rest of her life.

She was raised in Boulder, graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1939 and then went on to graduate from St. Patrick's School of Nursing in Missoula. She married her high school sweetheart, Rush Horton, and in later years married Jack Burke and lived the next 50 years in Bozeman. In 2000, she returned to Boulder to enjoy her remaining years in the shadow of the Elkhorn Mountains, a place she had enjoyed as a young girl.

She shared wonderful memories of times growing up in the house next to the jail in Boulder during her father's years as the sheriff, as well as epic family camping trips up the "Nursery" in the Elkhorn Mountains. Many occasions were spent at the family cabin up the Little Boulder along with 20-mile day hikes that none ever questioned the authenticity of. Mom always said all she ever wanted to be was a mother, like the one she had. In our estimation she was the best. Memories of our wonderful mother include her reading to us each night, pasty dinners, and countless other memories that we will carry with us now that she is gone. She felt being our mother was her greatest accomplishment, but there was so much more to her. She was a registered nurse, a partner with her brother and husband in land development in the Gallatin Valley, a Red Cross volunteer, involved in her sons' scouting years and attended more horse shows than she would ever imagine possible. She was exceptionally good at cards and pitch games were her favorite. You could always plan on handing over the "big" pot to her at the end of the night. She met great friends while working at Montana State University in later years and was a "mother away from home" for many college students. In later years with her neighbor and good friend Frank Seitz, she enjoyed Bobcats football and basketball games, trips to Virginia City and picnics with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Rush Horton and Jack Burke; grandson, Bobby Llewellyn; and special brother-in-law, Ed Slusher.

She is survived by her siblings, Carter (Judy) Williams of Great Falls, Wanda Barthalow of Saratoga, Calif., and Nan Slusher of Rockport, Texas; children, Dennis (Jean) Horton of Marysville, John Horton of Butte, and Colleen (Richard) Llewellyn of Boulder. Her life was blessed by her grandchildren, Claire, Dan and Joseph Horton of Helena, Steve and Molly Horton, Bozeman, Nan Llewellyn (Bradley Shephard) of Eagle River, Alaska, Laura Llewellyn (Kyle Brulla) Bozeman, Gina (Joel) Satterfield, Montana City, and Richard (Gina Lusk) Llewellyn of Spokane, Wash. Her two special great-granddaughters Jada and Isabella Satterfield were a delightful addition in the last few years. Several nieces and nephews also survive her.

She loved her family above all else and they loved her.

At her request there will be no service, but a private family gathering will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Catherine's Building Fund, P.O. Box 205, Boulder, Mont., or organizations that help those most in need. In keeping with the person she was, she would want each of you to do a kindness for someone else. That would honor her memory the most.
