Elizabeth Ann (Lamb) Hamel, of Albany, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Elizabeth was born in Aldershot, England, to Alice Alexandra Patience Lamb. She grew up near London, and upon completion of her schooling she entered the Royal Navy.

Elizabeth met the love of her life, Jim Hamel, while stationed in Sicily. They met on a double blind date, when Jim and his friend Don called over to the British base to see if there were any ladies who wanted to go out with a couple of “Yanks.” Elizabeth and her friend Ann eagerly accepted the invitation. Upon approaching the girls, Jim and Don flipped a coin to see who would get the "blonde" – Jim won!

Jim and Elizabeth were wed in Malta on June 5, 1964. They soon returned to the United States to begin a new life together in Albany, where Jim was stationed for recruiting duty.

In 1972, their lives were transformed when Jim and Liz came to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. She continued faithfully serving the Lord the rest of her life. Elizabeth was involved with evangelism and support of missionary work world-wide. She served in various roles as a Sunday school teacher, women’s ministry and Bible study leader, along with many other functions in the local church. She and Jim served over 20 years in many different capacities with Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF).

Elizabeth enjoyed life, laughter and having a “bit of fun” – often at your expense. She cared deeply for people and met their practical needs, as well as their spiritual needs. Her home was always open to host Bible studies, fellowships or just for a cup of tea and encouragement.

In May of this year, Elizabeth was reunited with her twin sister, Ann Hunt, for the first time in 78 years. This reunion made the 2015 Guinness World Records as the longest separated twins ever reunited.

A blessed wife, nourishing mother, caring grandmother, listening ear and a faithful friend, Elizabeth Hamel will be missed by many.

She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Quinton and Danita Hamel, and Jeff and Amy Hamel; seven grandchildren, Jazzlyn, Jared, Gabriela, Mikaela, Marshall, Seth and Elijah of Albany; and her twin sister, Ann Patricia Hunt, of Aldershot, England.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at Grace Bible Fellowship, 33990 McFarland Road, Tangent.

Memorial contributions may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Oregon, PO Box 2606, Lebanon, OR97355.
