He served with the Maine Heavy Artillery, Battery B, First Battalion during the Spanish-American War. He was Honorably Discharged on 31 March 1899 and returned to the family farm in Merrill, as seen on the 1900 U. S. Federal Census.

On the 01 Apr 1901, Ray and Jessie A. Soule filed their intention to marry. They were married on 10 April 1901, in Oakfield, Aroostook County. Jessie A. Soule was the younger daughter of Benjamin F. and Angeline F. (Grant) Soule. Benjamin was farmer in Oakfield, Aroostook County. At the time of their marriage, Ray was a Millman, and Jessie was a Dressmaker. Ray and Jessie were the parents of two daughters; Aleda E. Lilley (1902-1984) and Evelyne B. Lilley (1903-1996). Tragically, Jessie passed away in 1905, at the young age of 27.

Sometime before 1910, Ray had returned to live with his parents. His two young daughters were living with their maternal grandparents, Benjamin & Angie Soule, in Oakfield.

According to their marriage record, Ray and Martha Etta Bolstridge filed their intention to marry on 07 Feb 1910 and were married in Smyrna Mills, Aroostook on 13 Feb 1910. Martha was the daughter of Albert and Martha E. (Bragdon) Bolstridge, a Farmer living in Portage Lake, Aroostook County. Martha was working as a school teacher in Oakfield when she met Ray. The couple can be found on the 1910 U. S. Federal Census, living with Ray's parents. Also living with the family as a hired helper is Martha's sister, Myrtle.

Tragedy again struck Ray's family, when his second wife, Martha died of Endocarditis on 19 Jun, 1910. She was 23 years old.

After the death of his second wife, Ray started working at the Portage Lake Saw Mill, located approximately 50 miles north of Merrill. Here he worked as a general Laborer and Mill filler.

Ray would try marriage a third time, when he and Winifred Lantha Labbe filed their intention on 27 Apr 1914. They were married on 6 May 1914 in Eagle Lake, Aroostook, Maine. Winifred was the daughter of Remi & Mary (Albert) Labbe of Eagle Lake, Aroostook County. She was a Public School Teacher living in Winterville, Aroostook County at the time of her marriage.

The 1920 U. S. Federal Census lists Ray and Winifred as living in Portage Lake, Aroostook County with their two children, son Clifford Ambrose Lilley (1914-1993) and Margaret Lilley (1918 -).
