George Frederick was the third born child of nine known children and the third born son of six born to James E. Lilley and Elizabeth Jane Grant. George was born in New Brunswick, Canada and immigrated with his parents and 2 older siblings in 1850, settling in Linneus, Aroostook County, Maine.

According to the 1850 and 1860 U. S. Federal Census, George's family lived on a farm and all of the males of the family worked as farm laborers.

The 1870 U. S. Federal Census shows that the family relocated to Township 5 (Merrill Plantation) in Aroostook County, but still worked as Farmers. He married Nellie O. Gardner in 1872 in Smyrna, Aroostook, Maine and together they had four known children. The 1880 U. S. Federal census show that the Lilley family now consists of George, Nellie, 3 of their children and Nellie's son, George, by her first husband. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census shows that George is still working as a farmer. The family now consists of the Lilley's for children, along with 2 grandchildren (daughter and son of Edith Lilley Sharp.

The 1910 U. S. Federal Census shows that George is no longer a farmer, rather he's employed as a Building Contractor at the Gardner Saw-Mill, run by his In-Law's family. The family now consists of only one of the Lilley children and two grandchildren. Martha Bollstridge Lilley, wife of Ray O. Lilley. is also living with the family. There is also a hired girl, Myrtle Bollstridge also listed. She is Martha's sister.

In 1920 , the U. S. Federal Census shows that George has retired and he and Nellie are living in Merrill with their granddaughter.

He served as a Private in the Civil War from 1863 to 1865 in the Maine 1st Regiment, Heavy Artillery, Company L.
