Jane Frances (or Frances Jane) Lilley was the eldest child and first daughter of James and Elizabeth (Grant) Lilley. It is unclear exactly when she was born, no birth record has been found and different dates (10 Nov 1842, 13 Nov 1842, 10 Dec 1842) have been given as her birth date. It is known that she was born in Richmond, New Brunswick on the family farm.

She appears on the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Federal Census, living with her parents and siblings, living in Linneus, Aroostook, Maine. At some point before 1864, the family moved to Dyer Brook, Aroostook. Between then and 1870, Jane married John Heald, a farmer from Smyrna Mills, who was 39 years her senior. They were together, as seen by the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census, living near her father's farm. The couple never had any children. John Heald passed away in 1882 and was buried in Lower Smyrna Cemetery.

Shortly after John's death, Jane married her second husband, Samuel Drew Philpot, a widowed farmer from Dyer Brook. He was the father of 4 children by his first wife, his youngest son being about 8 years old when his mother died. Like Jane's first husband, Samuel was quite a number of years older than she. They did not have any children of their own. Samuel died in 1895, leaving Jane as a widow for a second time.

She did not remarry, rather living and working as a housekeeper for private families. She remained in the Smyrna Mills, Dyer Brook area, eventually passing away on 9 Aug 1910. She was buried near her parents in the Lilley Family lot in Dyer Brook Cemetery.
