Murray was son of John Elbert Beard and Rebecca Ann Thornhill (both in John E. Beard Cem., Pike Co., MS).
He m/ Jan 22, 1989 to Louessie May (also buried Bogue Chitto Cem.), dau. of John W. May & Rebecca Mandy Cothern May (Bogue Chitto Cem.). They had five children. Louessie died April 11, 1903.
Murray then m/ c1905 M. Jemima Davis, and they had seven children.

Murray invented what was known as the Murray Beard Side Harrow. His daughter, Aleen Beard Thorburn, said that her father was a brilliant man, who invented the harrow when he was only 19 years of age. Later he added other plow tools to the invention. However, he never recieved a patent for his inventions.
