John Alexander of Townsend, Delaware passed away on December 3, 2014 in St. Francis Hospital, Compassionate Care Hospice in Wilmington, Delaware. John was born in Millington, Maryland on December 26, 1928. He was one of sixteen children of John and Mary Ellen Alexander (Legg).

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 56 years Mary Ellen Alexander (Knotts), his sons Michael and Jeffrey, his grandchildren Samantha and Zachary, and all of his 15 siblings. John's mother and father passed away when he was very young, and he had to drop out of school to work. He joined the United States Army in 1947 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent in 1955, seeing military action in the Korean War. He also acquired his GED while serving his country.

He is survived by and will be deeply missed by his daughter, Mary Ellen (Richard) Greene, son John C. (Karissa), grandsons Chad and Blake (Lissa), granddaughter Tess, brothers-in-law, Franklin Shane and Andy Burger, sister-in-law Frances Knotts, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cats Lady and Tramp. He also leaves behind several friends, neighbors and aquaintances who were very dear to him.

After leaving the service, John worked for Chrysler Motors in Newark, Delaware until he retired in December 1992. He loved fishing, old Western movies, and was a long time member of the Middletown Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He shared his faith and friendship with many friends and family.

Visitation will be held at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown DE on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 11:00am at the funeral home. Internment will follow in Townsend cemetery.
