He listed his address at 447 Spring Garden Street, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Walter boarded the ship Mercury with his unit on May 25, 1918 at Newport News, Virginia for France. He returned aboard the ship Rotterdam on May 20, 1919 in Brest, France and arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey on May 31, 1919. He used his friend, Zigmad Zabinsi, at 335 Spring Garden Street, Reading, just blocks away from his given address.
